Rae Smith

Artist’s Bio

Rae Smith, at the age of 12, attended Saturday Art Classes at the college of Art in Halifax. In his thirty’s he joined the Atlantic Area Artist Association and eventually became president, serving for seven years. He exhibited paintings in the Atlantic winter Fair, and The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, winning many first prizes. About thirty years ago he built a studio in his house and his art took off, he was strongly influenced by pastel artist David Whitzman and David became his mentor.

In the summer of 2011 he visited the Vancouver Art Gallery ,where they had an exhibition on loan from the D’Orsay Museum of Paris. These were a group of pastel painting by the old masters, some were over 300 years old and were still vibrant colours as if they were painted yesterday.

He taught pastels in Halifax and Chester, Nova Scotia.
